3 · Grammaire
3.1 · Le futur proche — aller + infinitive
"I am going to…" — the everyday future. Conjugate aller, add the infinitive.
| aller + infinitif | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|
| je | vais sortir | I'm going to go out |
| tu | vas manger | you're going to eat |
| il / elle / on | va partir | we're going to leave |
| nous | allons visiter | we're going to visit |
| vous | allez rester | you're going to stay |
| ils / elles | vont venir | they're going to come |
- Negative wraps aller: Je ne vais pas sortir ce soir.
- Reflexive pronoun goes before the infinitive: Je vais me lever tôt.
- Question: Qu'est-ce que vous allez faire ? · Tu vas venir ?
Also the present for the future with a time word — very common: Demain, je travaille. Samedi, on part à Montréal.
3.2 · On = we (and people in general)
On takes the il/elle verb form but means nous in speech — far more common than nous in conversation. On va au cinéma ? · On part à huit heures. · On est trois. It also means "people / one": Au Québec, on dit « souper ». · Ici, on parle français. Adjectives after on = we agree in the plural: On est contents.
3.3 · Venir, partir, sortir, dormir
| venir | partir | sortir | dormir | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| je | viens | pars | sors | dors |
| tu | viens | pars | sors | dors |
| il / elle / on | vient | part | sort | dort |
| nous | venons | partons | sortons | dormons |
| vous | venez | partez | sortez | dormez |
| ils / elles | viennent | partent | sortent | dorment |
Partir, sortir, dormir share one pattern: singular drops the last consonant of the stem (par-s, sor-s, dor-s), plural keeps it (part-ons, sort-ons, dorm-ons). Venir is like tenir; note ils viennent (ভিয়েন) vs il vient (ভিয়াঁ). Like venir: revenir (come back), devenir (become).
- Tu viens avec nous ? — Oui, je viens !
- On part à quelle heure ? — On part à sept heures.
- Je sors ce soir avec des collègues.
- Le bébé dort. Nous ne dormons pas beaucoup !

7 · Culture — Weather talk and Canadian winter
- Weather is the universal small talk in France and especially in Québec, where winter is an identity. Learn Il fait frette ! (Québec slang for very cold) and you will get a smile. Temperatures are Celsius everywhere; −20 in Montréal in January is normal, −30 with wind chill happens.
- Québec has real seasons and a vocabulary for them: la slush (slushy snow), le verglas (black ice), une tempête de neige, le temps des sucres (maple season, March), l'été des Indiens (Indian summer). Dress vocabulary matters: des bottes d'hiver, une tuque (woolly hat, Québec), des mitaines (mittens).
- Invitations: in France, arriving 10–15 minutes late for a dinner at someone's home is polite (le quart d'heure de politesse); in Québec, be on time. Bring something — flowers, a dessert, or ask Qu'est-ce que j'apporte ?
- Je t'invite means "I'm paying." If a colleague says it in a café, do not argue; return the favour next time.
